Hit-and-run hospitalizes USC student

First-year remains in critical condition

A first-year USC student is in critical condition at Richland Memorial hospital after being hit by a suspected drunk driver on Assembly Street early Sunday morning.

The victim was walking across the street near Sonic Drive-In around 3 a.m. when he was struck by a car, said Deputy Chief Ruben Santiago of the Columbia Police Department. The car didn’t stop.

The Daily Gamecock confirmed that the victim was Mac Dunbar, a first-year student from Spartanburg, who lives in Columbia Hall.

A witness in a nearby taxi saw the event and directed the cab driver to follow the driver. Police officers were later able to track down and arrest the suspect, Ashley Coleman, 23.

Coleman is charged with felony driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident without giving information or rendering aide. Coleman spent the night in the Alvin Glenn Detention Center. Her bond hearing is this morning.

Santiago said the incident is still under investigation.
