After reading the article “Republican Budget Cuts Will Hurt Workers” in the Feb. 23 edition of the Daily Gamecock I found myself to be very disturbed. I didn’t completely disagree with the journalist’s argument; I mean, let’s be honest, making budget cuts is hard and painful. Everyone wants funding, and in the end some are simply just cut out.
vThe fact is that if it is not addressed we will see a day when our debt reaches nearly 100 percent of our total GDP. Talk about a ripple effect! The fiscal calamity that would be created if we reach those levels would attenuate the world economy and put us into the deepest depression our country has ever seen.
Don’t get me wrong — certain short term policies need to be addressed, and I am well aware that too deep of budget cuts could also cripple the economic recovery. But after the recent report from the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, it is clear as day that we have too much waste and that cuts are crucial.
The point is that the 112th Congress is faced with some very tough decisions, but to simply target and vilify the GOP for wanting to address cuts in certain areas is just iniquitous and ill-timed. This is the epitome of partisan politics. How about a change for once? Let’s see some bipartisan legislation brought to the floor that will help keep America the world’s superpower.
