Dancers fuse classic tunes, modern music in eclectic routines
Hundreds of students gathered on Greene Street to watch and cheer for campus organizations as they danced to their favorite hits.
This year’s “Spurs and Struts” dance competition, in line with the weeklong Homecoming theme of “Rockin’ the Garnet and Black,” fused classic rock songs with new beats and dance moves. Performances also featured rock star themes with props such as inflatable guitars, money and glitter.
The first place team consisted of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Kappa Delta sorority and Sigma Nu fraternity took second place. Phi Mu sorority and Delta Tau Delta fraternity came in third.
The competition consisted of 12 teams, made up of either organizations performing solo or in pairings, that performed styles varying from hip-hop and shagging to The Charleston and The Bird.
Each song lasted 30 seconds and varied from Michael Jackson, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, B2K, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Aaron Carter, KISS and Britney Spears. Many organizations added new hits to their performances, including LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass.”
Student Body President Joe Wright and Student Body Vice President Emily Saleeby co-hosted the event.
“This was a great way to get involved in student body and have a lot of fun,” Saleeby said.
