Creed T-shirts distributed on Greene Street
Dozens of students made a stop by Greene Street Wednesday, not for games or free food, but to sign the Carolinian Creed.
The Carolina Judicial Council held a group of events for Carolinian Creed and Diversity Day, which highlights the 21-year-old document.
Bagels and fruit were served for the Carolinian Creed breakfast at Preston’s at Noon, where motivational speaker and karate world champion Clint Cora gave a speech on “kicking down the barriers to diversity.”
“Clint was a fantastic speaker,” wrote Carolina Judicial Council President Douglas Remington in an email. He said Clint brought a very unique approach to motivation and diversity that was both engaging and educational to all of the Carolinian Creed Breakfast attendees.
Later in the day, the Council set up a table in front of the Russell House where students could sign a large poster of the Creed and get a free T-shirt, courtesy of Student Government.
Student Body President Joe Wright said via email that SG “wanted to get really involved” with helping the council this year. So they gave 3,000 shirts, each displaying different parts of the Creed.
Each shirt would have one of the five tenets of the Creed — academic integrity, personal dignity, property rights, discouraging bigotry and concern for others — on the back. This way, students could pick the one that means the most to them and wear it “proudly” on their shirt, Wright said.
"Part of our administration this year is to make sure that students knew about the Carolina Creed and they really owned what it means.”
First-year studio art student Leah Edwards signed the Creed because she supports giving everyone a voice.
“I heard [the Council] saying it’s about being a voice in the outer communities," Edwards said. "It’s a good thing to have a say-so in the community and uphold the values in the community.”
