Africa Night features fashion show, poetry and dancing
The Pan-African Students Association's Africa Night was full of dancing, dresses and languages of many different African countries.
The event, which was open to students and the public, benefited the Red Cross by selling "Hope to Africa" shirts being sold and accepting donations. At press time, the amount raised wasn't yet available.
The event featured an array of performances featuring traditional staples of many African cultures.
"We had a poetry reading, a fashion show, dance performances from a lot of different sub-Saharan African countries," said Gelila Selassie, president of PANASA and fourth-year psychology student.
The event was the first of its kind hosted by PANASA.
"We've participated in the International Student Association's World Night and the Columbia International Festival before, but this is the first show we've done on our own," Selassie said.
The inaugural event, which Selassie hopes to make annual, hosted more than 300 guests.
"I would say it was around 350," Selassie said. "I'm very, very happy. It went extremely well and I'm very proud of the work that everyone put in."
