Limited edition meal offered until Feb. 29
Carolina Dining presented the “Sarge Fry-E” sandwich Thursday afternoon, the eve of the baseball team’s opening day, at the Ball Park grill on the first floor of the Russell House.
During the 2011 College World Series, Carolina Dining announced a creative and delicious contest for students to develop a sandwich that would honor the baseball team’s recent success and get students excited for the upcoming 2012 season. Contest winner Jeffrey Bickley, a second-year electrical engineering student, answered their call.
Bickley chose to give the sandwich the name “Sarge Fry-E” to commemorate the old baseball stadium and athletic department legend, Weldon B. “Sarge” Frye.
“I saw the contest on Facebook and decided I could come up with just as good a sandwich as anybody.” Bickley said.
After deciding upon the five finalists, it was up to Carolina Dining’s Facebook friends to poll for their favorite recipe. Bickley’s recipe of roasted pork, swiss cheese, caramelized onions, red peppers, shredded carrots, cilantro, mayo and the most important ingredient, french fries (hence the name Fry-e), prevailed among other submitted recipes. Bickley was presented with a certificate and free samples of the Sarge Fry-E sandwich were passed out to students during lunch Thursday.
Students seemed to love the sandwich, as Cocky and Chef Al couldn’t keep their trays full.
Although Bickley is a huge baseball fan, he doesn’t admit to being a cook. However, he does watch the TV show “Man Versus Food” and admits it could have been where he drew some inspiration for the sandwich.
With baseball season kicking off this weekend, Carolina Dining, Cocky and Bickley hope the unveiling will draw students’ attention and simulate excitement about the upcoming season.
If you didn’t get to taste Bickley’s delicious creation, don’t worry. The Sarge Fry-E sandwich is available until Feb. 29 at the Russell House Ballpark Grill.
