Police seek third man regarding alleged beating earlier this month
Police have arrested a second suspect in last weekend’s brawl on Harden Street.
Benedict College officers arrested John Cornelius Sumner, 21, of Stockbridge, Ga., in connection with the incident in which a man was allegedly kicked and punched in the head and chest by seven to 10 men early Sunday morning, according to an incident report.
The victim was taken to a hospital with a broken jaw, severe lacerations and a swollen face.
Sumner was arrested in an apartment near the college’s campus, according to Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons, and is charged with second-degree assault and battery.
He is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
The Friday afternoon arrest came a day after police announced they’d arrested another suspect in the brawl, Stanley McBride, and issued warrants for two others — Sumner and Michael Jermel Kendrix, of Austell, Ga.
More arrests are possible, though, Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said Thursday.
Once arrested, Kendrix is also expected to be charged with second-degree assault and battery, according to the release.
