WUSC launches annual fundraising week

USC’s student-run radio station, WUSC Columbia 90.5 FM, will host its annual fall fundraiser Thursday, Oct. 25 through next Thursday, Nov. 1.

The non-profit radio station raises the vast majority of their operational money themselves and relies on this type of fundraiser once a semester for funds.

“Our goal for this year is $5,000,” Kate Appelbaum, WUSC’s public affairs director said. “Students can donate any amount of money they would like online but a great way to show support is simply to attend our events.”

WUSC has a variety of events scheduled for the week beginning with Thursday’s Rave to the Grave at The Library, a bar in Five Points. The event begins at 10 p.m. and will have a $5 cover charge for people under the age of 21 and a $3 charge for those that are 21 or older. WUSC DJs will be playing electronic music and all proceeds from the cover charges will go to WUSC.

The station will host The Halloween Rock Show Saturday night, featuring local bands Malmuk, Lamb Handler and the Losos at New Brookland Tavern. Doors open at 8 p.m., the bands start at 9:30 p.m. and the cover charge is $8 for people under 21 and $5 for those 21 or older. The event will include a costume contest with a $100 first-place prize.

At noon Sunday, El Burrito will host touring indie rock band Les Racket, from Brooklyn, N.Y. The event will also feature some unannounced local bands.

Finally, on Halloween (Wednesday), WUSC will host the annual Zombie Walk. Students are invited to meet at the Russell House Patio at 5:30 p.m. to get dressed up in zombie makeup by WUSC volunteers. Participants will then walk a long route to Moe’s for percent night. The event is free and open to all and Moe’s will provide a percentage of their profits from purchased food to WUSC.

Throughout the week, beginning Friday at 12:01 a.m. through Thursday, Nov. 1 at 11:59 p.m., WUSC will broadcast in a “Pick Your Poison” them.e WUSC DJs will air songs from their favorite artist, genre, label or movie soundtrack.

“WUSC is not licensed to play Top-40 music, but attempts to play a variety of music for everyone which simply hasn’t hit the charts yet,” Appelbaum said.

She said their programing is designed for the USC community and encouraged everyone to tune in.

The fundraising week’s events are designed to provide entertainment for all, while providing support for the station. Students can make a tax deductible donation to WUSC at their website, wusc.sc.edu, or by calling (803) 777-7243.
