Chipotle opens third Columbia location

Gervais Street restaurant offers burrito bowls, Patron margaritas

After some delays due to kitchen floor problems, Chipotle had their grand opening in the Vista on Tuesday, June 18th.

Around 12:30 p.m., with a line about 15 people long and workers constantly having to replace ingredients on the assembly line, it seemed like the official opening was going well. This Chipotle brought some pleasant surprises; the establishment is vast, with a patio right outside, and the seating area is aesthetically pleasing, with metal stools covered with light orange fabric.
Chipotle also serves margaritas, made with Patron tequila for $6.50, or with Sauza tequila for $4.50. Alcoholic beverages at fast-food burrito joints seems to be a trend in Columbia, with Main Street’s Moe’s selling bottles of Corona next to the register.
The chain’s famous burrito bowls were filled with flavor and zest, and employees made sure that customers got what they wanted as quickly as possible. The wait in line with 15 people lasted only about 10 minutes, and the food was worth the wait.

Many customers were enjoying their food and the atmosphere that Chipotle created. One customer was overheard saying Chipotle was poised to take over Columbia’s Mexican market with its prime location in the Vista and tasty fare. Those who’ve grown accustomed to Moe’s will have to adjust when stepping into the new Gervais Street burrito shop; customers must pay extra for chips, there is no queso available, and the menu is limited. However, the menu is simplified and streamlined, making, for some, a much better eating experience.

After a busy first day, Chipotle location looks ahead to many more like it. Once the vast majority of USC’s students return in August, Moe’s Monday may have a strong competitor now that Chipotle has opened its new Vista location. After all, it’s much quicker than driving to Trenholm Plaza.

Stop by between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. to indulge in a burrito bowl or quesadilla. And maybe even a margarita.
