Costumes donned, items thrown at Halloweentime showing
Halloween was off to an early start in the Russell House Theater on Wednesday night as students came to see a special showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Red boas, black-rimmed glasses, and red lipstick were seen among the crowd of students who decided to dress up for the event.
Showing the cult movie on the week of Halloween is becoming a tradition for Carolina Productions, with many students coming to take part in the traditions surrounding the movie.
Since Rocky Horror’s debut in 1975, fans have flocked to showings of the film to recreate scenes and add their own twists on the plot. For example, when a couple gets married in the opening scene, it is tradition for the audience to throw rice. Audience members also dance along in their seats to the most famous song from the musical- “Time Warp.”
Before the showing, a representative from Carolina Productions asked audience members to not throw rice or toast. However, paper streamers and the waving of cell phone lights were allowed.
As the iconic red lips began to sing the opening song, students were also heard singing along to the song and adding their own comments and jokes. Whenever the narrator of the film came on screen, audience members yelled, “Where’s your neck?” Some students also shouted offensive names whenever the characters Brad or Janet appeared on screen.
For some students, Wednesday night was the first time they saw the film. One of those students was Cameron Polomski, a third-year environmental science student.
“I didn’t really know what to expect,” said Polomski. “I had heard about it before and I knew it was a cult classic that a lot of people had seen. It was an … interesting experience, to say the least.”
