Gamecocks cruise past Bucknell

Baseball earns 2 dominant wins to open season

After postponing Friday’s season opener due to unfavorable weather, the Gamecocks got their 2014 campaign underway with a doubleheader Saturday.

In the early game, left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery earned the victory in South Carolina’s 17-4 win over the Bison. The junior went five innings and allowed just three hits and no runs.

The Gamecocks were powered by sophomore D.C. Arendas’s first career home run, one of his three hits on four at bats in the game. Arendas started the game at designated hitter after giving way to freshman Marcus Mooney in the battle for the shortstop spot.

In game-two of the doubleheader, sophomore pitcher Jack Wynkoop went five innings of his own and claimed the win as South Carolina went on to demolish the Bison 12-2.

Junior outfielder Tanner English turned in a stellar performance on offense, going 3-4 at the plate and driving in a career-high five runs in the contest.

South Carolina will wrap up the series against Bucknell tomorrow at 12:30 with freshman Wil Crowe on the mound.
