In our opinion: Fraternity Council walking the right way

We applaud the Fraternity Council for their partnership with the Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM).

The council's collective action speaks louder than any individual fraternity or group of fraternities could. The actions as part of this partnership are important as well, as too often the response to sexual assault is after the fact and not preventative.

Prevention education and bystander training for fraternity members will hopefully prevent future incidents. While the $10,000 donation is extremely helpful, this education will leave a lasting impact inside the houses. Much has been made of the environment surrounding fraternity events — working to improve that environment is a key part of changing the perception and reality of sexual assault not just at USC, but nationwide.

As far as Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, we are glad to see the inclusive nature of the event promoted by STSM and the council. This issue affects the entire campus and surrounding area, not just the fraternities and sororities. Recognition of the importance of a sense of community is part of what makes this participation meaningful.

Too often lately fraternities have been in the news for negative reasons. It's good to see fraternities at our university making a positive impact in the community, even if it also benefits them with good press. Promotion of this partnership also raises awareness for the event and issue, not something to be overlooked — especially with April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

At too many other schools, these types of partnerships only happen after an especially horrific incident. While this type of training and community involvement is overdue for some students and some in Greek Life at USC, we recognize and appreciate the willingness of the Fraternity Council to tackle this issue before such a divisive event occurs. They are walking in the right direction.
