The annual Walk a Mile In Her Shoes will take place Wednesday on the Statehouse grounds. The walk will begin at 6:30 p.m.
For the sixth year, the event is put on by the Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM), an organization that "advocates for and supports survivors of sexual assault and abuse in Richland, Lexington, Newberry and Sumter counties."
The walk will start at the Statehouse, continue down Main Street and end back at the Statehouse. The walk totals to three-fourths of a mile.
STSM encourages people to cheer on those who are walking the route.
The walk is not just for men but for women and children with no age limit. Heels will not be provided, so participants are encouraged to bring their own.
Walk a Mile is held annually to raise awareness for sexual assault and abuse victims.
The event also shows sexual assault survivors that the Columbia community and USC are standing with them to bring sexual assault to an end. The event is also held to help raise money for STSM.
An after party will be held at Tin Roof. All drinks and food specials will benefit STSM.
The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. STSM will be holding a number of events during April and the beginning of May.
STSM will hold their annual Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29 to help raise awareness about rape and sexual assault. STSM will also hold their 11th annual golf tournament on Monday, May 18 at the Golden Hills Golf and County Club in Lexington.
