The South Carolina women's soccer team rushed out onto the field with full intensity to face Alabama, which ultimately helped secure its 1-0 win.
This was the first SEC game for the Gamecocks this season, only making the stakes high for each player.
Senior midfielder Lindsey Lane was one of the game changers for South Carolina, scoring a penalty kick in the 76th minute on a pass from All-American striker Savannah McCaskill.
"Every game's tough," Lane said, "but we find a way; that’s what we do.
There was a constant battle from both teams until the final second on the clock. According to head coach Shelley Smith, McCaskill did not let her team remain complacent, taking every opportunity to score. McCaskill drew the penalty and trusted Lane to take the kick.
“Great job for Lindsey to step up and finish that," Shelley Smith said. “Lindsey did what a senior does and puts it away”
The Gamecocks will continue their SEC slate in a road match against Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
“I’m excited about tonight, what we did," Smith said. "Alabama came out and gave us a great battle ... I was proud of our girls to find a way to win that game and keep it under shutout.”
