Silva, Samuel, Mayr receive honors

Three Gamecocks received recognition on Monday for their accomplishments in the post and current season.

Senior men's basketball forward Chris Silva was named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, along with 49 other players. Silva is the first Gamecock to receive this recognition since Devan Downey.

Silva will have to wait until the Final Four in Minneapolis to see who will be awarded the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy, marking the top college basketball player in the country.

Kick returner Deebo Samuel also received recognition this week for his performance in the Gamecocks' fifth win of the season.

Samuel was named the SEC special teams player of the week after tying a South Carolina record for most kickoff returns for a touchdown.

Samuel returned five kicks for 178 yards in the win over Ole Miss on Saturday. He now has a record of four career kickoff returns for a touchdown. This is the third time Samuel has received special teams player of the week honors in his collegiate career.

Although men's soccer failed to make their conference tournament, one player received recognition for his performance off the field.

Junior striker Luca Mayr was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.560. Mayr is a finance major at the Darla Moore School of Business.

Mayr was a first-time selection, but made the C-USA Academic Honor Roll in previous seasons. He has been able to also have success on the field, leading South Carolina in points for two straight seasons.
