Gamecock men's tennis rallies after weekend losses to rout Kentucky

After dropping three matches last weekend, the South Carolina men's tennis team rallied and beat Kentucky 7-0 Thursday at the Carolina Tennis Center.

The Gamecocks are currently in the middle of an eight-game lineup against top-50 opponents.

Coming into the match, the Kentucky Wildcats had a 9-8 overall record and a 3-2 record in SEC play. The Wildcats went 2-7 against ranked opponents. They fell to No. 37 ranked Arkansas last week, shortly after beating No. 17 Alabama 5-2.

South Carolina entered Thursday's match with singles players No. 5 Paul Jubb and No. 93 Daniel Rodrigues. Kentucky has just one top-100 ranked player, No. 36 Ryotaro Matsumura.

The Gamecocks cruised through their doubles matches against the Wildcats to earn yet another doubles point, making them 10-0 on the season in this category.

Jubb and his partner Raphael Lambling are ranked No. 63 in doubles in the country. The duo beat Cesar Bourgois and Theo McDonald of Kentucky 6-1. Rodrigues and doubles partner Beau Pelletier played a close match against Kentucky, but held a constant lead and came out on top, winning 6-4.

With an early 2-0 lead after doubles, South Carolina went on to singles play. Jubb, Pelletier, Joe Brailovsky and Thomas Brown won their first sets.

Rodrigues and Lambling lost their first sets against the Wildcats, but came back and won their second sets. As the third sets began on courts two and three, the Gamecocks took over.

Rodrigues beat No. 118 Enzo Wallart (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) while Lambling held on to stun Kento Yamada (3-6, 7-5, 1-0).

On court one, Jubb clinched the Gamecock win with a (6-3, 7-5) victory over Matsumura.

All six singles players for South Carolina were victorious over the Wildcats.

The Gamecocks will host Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. on Saturday for their next match.
