Masks will not be required in classrooms beginning March 17, according to an email announcement from interim Provost Stephen Cutler.
The email said the decision comes after "careful consideration" and low COVID-19 case counts around Richland County and on campus. The university reduced mask requirements from everywhere on campus to in instructional spaces last month.
"This is great news and further evidence that we are moving toward the endemic stage of COVID-19," the email said.
The university has reported less than 100 active COVID-19 cases each week for the last month. It also reported that about 72% of all students, faculty and staff are vaccinated.
This week, the university reported only five current active COVID-19 cases, though those tests were taken from March 6 to March 12, when many students were away from campus for spring break.
Masks will still be required in medical facilities, at testing sites and on public transportation, the email said.
Free testing and vaccinations will still be available on campus.
