Women's basketball freshman guard becomes third player to enter transfer portal

One day after the South Carolina women's basketball team celebrated its national championship title with a parade in downtown Columbia, the Gamecocks lost another player to the transfer portal.

Freshman guard Saniya Rivers announced her intention to enter the transfer portal via social media on Thursday, making her the third Gamecock to do so. 

Rivers appeared in 27 games for South Carolin during the 2021-2022 season, averaging 2.3 points per game. She played a part in the teams win against Louisville during the Final Four with four assists and a block. She also appeared in the national championship game against UConn, making one of her two free throw attempts. 

"Thanks to Coach Staley and the rest of the coaching staff and program for affording me with the opportunity to win a National Championship in my freshman year with this team," Rivers said on Twitter. "It has truly been an experience of a lifetime."

Rivers was a big part of South Carolina's No. 1 recruiting class coming into the 2021-2022 season. She was ranked the No. 3 players overall in the class of 2021 and was ranked No. 2 at the guard postion.She was also voted the Gatorade and USA Today Player of the Year during her senior year of high school. 

Rivers leaves South Carolina with three more years of elligability remaining.
