Playlist: Hyperpop never died

Hyperpop music may not be receiving the same mainstream attention it once has, but its online community has kept the hyperpop of today relevant.

What first started as an anti-genre meant to mock pop music, hyperpop has always been on the cutting edge of music production. It is loosely defined as an electronic subgenre that includes a variety of microgenres, such as anti-pop and nightcore. These microgenres may show large differences in sound, but they are all characterized by unique producer tags, heavy use of synth and bass and immense amounts of autotune.

The subgenre first gained a foothold in the United Kingdom in the early 2010s. Inspired by UK-based artists such as SOPHIE and Charli XCX, hyperpop peaked in the United States with 100 gecs' 2019 album, "1000 gecs." The album was a delayed hit, as most of its success came from its use as a TikTok trend in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to an explosion of artists making hyperpop music from their own homes.

Take a listen to the high-energy, youthful sounds of post-2020 hyperpop with artists such as ElyOtto, i9bonsai and Kitz.
