As the 2024-2025 school year kicks off, students are acclimating to dining options on campus. For students with limited meal plans or busy schedules, home cooked meals are a time-saving option. Oatmeal is an easy and healthy breakfast that is a great way to start off the day.
According to Healthline, oats lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels while also being rich in fiber. They cost around $3 per canister at Publix, making them a good choice for students trying to save money or at least not break the bank.
Students can also add almonds and bananas to oatmeal, among many other toppings, to customize the recipe.
Ingredients:
1 cup water
½ cup of old fashioned rolled oats
½ of a thinly sliced banana
14 chopped almonds
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional)
Directions:
- In a small saucepan over a stove top on low to medium heat, pour water and add oats until gently boiling. Stir until the oats have soaked up most of the liquid to make a thick consistency (about eight minutes).
- Mix in banana, almonds and cinnamon. Add other nuts and spices as desired such as flaxseed, coconut flakes, raisins or any toppings you want.
- Let it cool for three minutes. Enjoy!
