One victim has been transported to an area hospital after a shooting at an off-campus student apartment late Monday afternoon.
In an email sent to residents at 5:22 p.m., Alight Columbia said Cayce Police officers responded to the scene after the report of at least one gunshot that "apparently hit the driver of a vehicle" in the apartment's parking lot. The injured driver lost control and hit another individual, according to the email addressed from General Manager Tyreke Dunbar.
The victim was not a USC student.
"The safety and security of all our residents remain our highest priorities," Dunbar said. "Firearms and other weapons are prohibited anywhere at Alight Columbia, as well as any violent conduct. We will take swift action to exclude from the community any person who threatens the safety of others."
In a Facebook post from the Cayce Police, the department said it believes the shooting is an isolated incident.
The Cayce Police Department originally blocked all entrances to the apartment, located at 800 Alexander Drive in Cayce. But in a later Facebook post, it told residents they could enter by showing officers their ID.
Alight Columbia plans to continue to work with law enforcement to investigate the shooting and to provide more information as it is available, according to the email.
"Please always report any suspicious or threatening activity in or around the community," Dunbar said. "This community belongs to all of us, and together we can help keep it safe."
The Cayce Police Department encouraged anyone with information to reach out at 803-794-0456 or 888-CRIME-SC.
