Guest Column: Students should come to the 'Stuff the Bus' initiative

Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on our campus in Columbia and across the Southeast, leaving behind a trail of devastation. My thoughts and prayers go out to the countless number of students, faculty and administration at the University of South Carolina who have lost homes, property and in some tragic cases, even the loss of loved ones. This moment presents a challenge for this state and our campus community. I know that together we can rise above the hardships caused by Helene and help recovery efforts.

Having lived in South Carolina my whole life, I have always heard about the devastation of hurricanes. And from what I have read about the impacts of these natural disasters, it is easy to get overwhelmed and feel powerless. But every small act of kindness here can create a ripple effect throughout our state.

As student leaders, we have a responsibility to foster a spirit of unity and community in these moments. Today, we have an opportunity to demonstrate the real strength and compassion of Gamecock nation. Each of us can play a small role in this recovery effort, and together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of those affected.

That is why Student Government is committed to lending a helping hand to recovery efforts. This week, we have organized a “Stuff the Bus” donation drive to collect essential supplies such as clean water, non-perishable food, clothing and personal hygiene products. Each one of these items can make a world of difference for families struggling to rebuild their lives. Every donation, no matter how small, is important.

Please join us as we start our "Stuff the Bus" campaign this Friday on Greene Street in front of the Russell House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your donations and place them directly on the bus. If you can’t make it to the bus on Friday, don’t let that get in the way of helping. You can also drop off items at the Leadership and Service Center or the Student Government suite in Russell House, where we have set up a dedicated bin labeled "Hurricane Helene Donations."

I hope you will take this opportunity to help others in need. Your participation — whether through donations, volunteering or simply spreading the word — will make a difference.

I want to thank you in advance for your support and commitment to “Stuff the Bus.” Gamecocks rise to face tough challenges. Let’s rise to this challenge, support one another and give back to this great community.

Forever to thee,

Patton Byars

Student Body President
