It’s that time of the year again, Gamecocks. As we prepare for the last two weeks before finals, it can be a stressful time for a lot of us. The workload is piling on, and you may feel like you spend all your time studying.

While Thomas Cooper Library is a convenient study space for many students, it can become repetitive and overcrowded, especially during this time of the year. Whether you’re tired of the same old scenery or just need some motivation to get out and do your work, here is a list of study spots for you to try so you can successfully prepare for exams.

Richland Public Library

Thomas Cooper Library is not the only library available to students needing a place to study. The Richland Public Library located near downtown Columbia is a great choice for students looking for somewhere less crowded. Similar to Thomas Cooper, you have the option to reserve a study room, or you can roam the three main floors searching for a relaxing place to get your work done.

This library is located at 1431 Assembly Street. It is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Downtown Starbucks

Coffee shops are great for studying and if you want more of a downtown feel, then the Starbucks on Main Street may be perfect for you. This Starbucks is unique compared to any other Starbucks in the area as it can be found in the basement of the Sheraton Hotel.

This study spot is perfect for when you want to roam Soda City Market, watch a movie at Nickelodeon Theater or explore the Columbia Museum of Art before getting some assignments done.

This Starbucks is located at 1400 Main Street and is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the week.

The Horseshoe

Known for its beautiful scenery, the Horseshoe offers a great study spot for students. You can bring a blanket and settle down on the scenic grass or sit on one of the many benches lined on the walkways. Either way, homework with a view is always a peaceful way to prepare for stressful times.

Tables outside Thomas Cooper Library

If you still want to be close to the library but prefer to stay outside, the tables located by the Thomas Cooper fountain may be the place for you. Each table has enough room for you to sit and study with your friends. And similar to the Horseshoe, the beautiful view of the fountain is a great way to get work done in peaceful tranquility.

Darla Moore

USC is known for its international business program, and the business school building reflects it. The Darla Moore building is arguably one of the most unique buildings on campus, with a total of five floors and amenities such as its own cafe, a student lounge and a courtyard filled with palm trees to make you feel right at home. If you are a student in the Moore School, you can even reserve your own study room up to one week in advance so you can focus on acing your finals.

Darla Moore is open from 8 a.m to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m to 4 p.m on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

Gambrell Patio

The Gambrell patio, located on the third floor of Gambrell, is a great place to get your work done if you are in need of some fresh air. Many tables in between the Humanities and Gambrell building fill up pretty quickly in between classes, but the patio usually has available seating and is much quieter, helping you stay focused when completing your assignments.

Cool Beans

If you’re a coffee lover and prefer to study indoors, Cool Beans Coffee is a great way to get an energy boost while preparing for finals. Located across from the Horseshoe, this coffee shop is small but cozy, and perfect for when the weather finally drops below 50 degrees.

Cool Beans is located on 1217 College Street. It is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Finals season is often a stressful time for many students. Work is piling on, the library is always full and the end feels so close yet so far. But don't worry, Gamecocks! With this list, you can find a study spot perfect for you to stay motivated and finish the year off strong.
