The No. 10  South Carolina softball team defeated Wofford 2-0 on Wednesday night to advance its record to 28-7. This was the first time Wofford and South Carolina have met in softball.

The Gamecocks scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning, with sixth-year outfielder Abigail Knight and junior catcher Lexi Winters hitting RBI singles.

Even though South Carolina would only score 2 runs, the Gamecocks had multiple chances to add on additional runs through the game as it left seven runners on base, including three in the first inning.

Knight and Winters were both able to reach base again, but were left stranded after senior infielder Brooke Blankenship and freshman catcher Mya Flindt failed to advance the runners.

The Terriers had its best chance of taking the lead in the fifth inning. Sophomore outfielder Abbi Campbell reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second after redshirt sophomore infielder Kaytlin Greenwood hit a single.

The pair would then each advance one base after junior pitcher Jori Head walked freshman infielder Rivers Sampson to load the bases. The Gamecocks got out of the inning unscathed after freshman infielder Brianna Stanley was popped up for an out.

Sophomore pitcher Nealy Lamb started the game for the Gamecocks and pitched four innings. In that time, she struck out five batters, gave up just two hits and earned her seventh win of the year.

Heard would replace Lamb in the fifth inning. After giving up two hits to Campbell and Greenwood, Heard would go the remainder of the game allowing just one hit.

A strong defense

With the win on Wednesday night, the Gamecocks have held 10 opponents to zero runs this season. Tonight, Wofford would get just three hits, tying its season low for hits in a game this season.

The Gamecocks have three pitchers this season that all have over 50 strikeouts on the season, with the three being Lamb, Heard and sixth year pitcher Sam Gress.

South Carolina also features six players who have not recorded a single error this season. The Gamecocks also rank seventh in double players per game.

Struggles on offense

South Carolina recorded just 2 runs on six hits tonight with Winters and senior infielder Ella Chancey being the only Gamecocks to record multiple hits.

The two runs scored tonight is the second lowest run total this season, with South Carolina scoring 1 run in wins against East Carolina and Texas Tech. In the 2025 season, the Gamecocks have outscored opponents 238-104.

Second win over an in-state foe this season

Wofford is now the third team the Gamecocks have played that share the same state with the other two schools being Clemson and Coastal Carolina. South Carolina is 2-1 this season against in-state opponents.

Coastal Carolina was able to defeat South Carolina 5-3 on March 12. The Chanticleers ended the Gamecocks 31-game winning streak against in-state opponents dating back to 2017.

The Gamecocks did beat Clemson 6-0 on March 25. The two schools will meet later this season in Clemson, South Carolina, on April 15.
