USC's NAACP chapter holds a student-run protest on Feb. 5, 2022. The chapter led members of the USC community to the State House in a walk advocating for the end of the controversial Heritage Act.
The NAACP hosted a protest event in response to the continuation of the Heritage Act on Feb. 5, 2022. Led by USC NAACP president Caley Bright and South Carolina NAACP youth and college division president Courtney McClain, students and faculty made signs and chants to amplify their call for change.
Led by members of the USC NAACP chapter, students, faculty and members of the USC community began their walk to the statehouse. With roads being blocked off by USCPD, the protesters made their way to the statehouse on Feb. 5, 2022.
The protestors reach the back of the statehouse on Feb. 5, 2022. Protesters took aim at the SC legislature over controversies surrounding the S.C. Heritage Act, which serves to protect certain statues and monuments tied to state history.
Upon arriving at the statehouse, protesters pass a monument dedicated to former SC governor Strom Thurmond on Feb. 5, 2022. Thurmond was an advocate for segregationist policies during his tenure as senator and used a filibuster in an attempt to stop a Civil Rights proposal in 1957.
The protesters made their way to the front of the statehouse carrying signs that voiced their disdain for the S.C. Heritage Act and the figures it serves to protect on Feb. 5, 2022. Some signs from the events the protesters carried read '#NotMyHeritage,' 'Aim to Rename,' and 'Silence is Violence.'

USC NAACP chapter president Caley Bright finished the event off by delivering a speech to the crowd of students and community members on Feb 5, 2022. She called for SC legislatures to address the NAACP's issues with the S.C. Heritage Act and further voiced the chapter's displeasure with the university's and state's handling of this issue.
The protesters gather on the steps of the statehouse to complete their protest on Feb 5, 2022. The USC NAACP chapter sponsored this event calling for the repeal of the S.C. Heritage Act and the removal of segregation and civil war era SC figures from university building names and state sponsored structures.
After the protest ended, members of the USC NAACP chapter as well as the students and community members who took part in the protest participated in interviews carried out by various media groups including The Daily Gamecock and SGTV.
