The festival is meant to commemorate the life and music of Jerry Garcia, the lead guitarist for Grateful Dead. This year marks 9 years since the first JerryFest. Since then, JerryFest has remained a popular event for Columbia natives and other visitors alike.

The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center held the South Carolina Horror Convention from Sept. 16-17, 2023. This event marks the first Horror Convention in South Carolina. The two-day event featured local and regional vendors, special guests and a short haunted house from the Dark Castle Haunted Attractions company. According to pre-sale ticket sales, more than 2,500 horror fans attended the event. Many attendees cosplayed as their favorite horror villains, with some competing in the cosplay contest on the last day of the convention. The South Carolina Horror Convention is set to return in 2024.

PHOTOS: Columbia welcomes 1st Horror Convention to the Palmetto State

The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center held the South Carolina Horror Convention from Sept. 16-17, 2023. This event marks the first Horror Convention in South Carolina. The two-day event featured local and regional vendors, special guests and a short haunted house from the Dark Castle Haunted Attractions company. According to pre-sale ticket sales, more than 2,500 horror fans attended the event. The University of South Carolina celebrated its 60th anniversary of desegregation with the groundbreaking for a new monument on Sept. 11, 2023. The monument will stand outside of McKissick Museum and honor Henrie Monteith Treadwell, Robert G. Anderson and James L. Solomon Jr., the first three Black students to enroll at USC. After the commemoration at McKissick Museum, the College of Arts and Sciences revealed a plaque in memory of James L. Solomon Jr. in LeConte College.

The University of South Carolina celebrated its 60th anniversary of desegregation with the groundbreaking for a new monument on Sept. 11, 2023. The monument will stand outside of McKissick Museum and honor Henrie Monteith Treadwell, Robert G. Anderson and James L. Solomon Jr., the first three Black students to enroll at USC. After the commemoration at McKissick Museum, the College of Arts and Sciences revealed a plaque in memory of James L. Solomon Jr. in LeConte College.

Fans of both the South Carolina Gamecocks and the North Carolina Tar Heels filled Romare Bearden Park in anticipation of the game between the two schools, with some arriving as early as 3 a.m ahead of the 9 a.m. show and 7:30 p.m. game.


Carolina Productions held its “Country at Koger” event at the Koger Center on Aug. 27, 2023. The free event for students featured performances from country artists Jordana Bryant, Vincent Mason and Will Cullen. Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused the event to move indoors where each artist performed their hit songs and covers of popular country artists including Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen and others. Will Cullen performed mashups of popular songs and various genres during his headlining act.

Potential new members receive an invitation to a sorority during Bid Day, and all of the sororities celebrate with their new pledge classes.

South Carolina baseball swept its three-game series against Florida on April 20-22. The Gamecocks run-ruled the Gators 13-3 in seven innings on Thursday and continued to balance offensive firepower with effective pitching, beating the Gators 5-2 on Friday and finishing out the series 7-5 on Saturday.

South Carolina baseball swept its three-game series against Florida on April 20-22. The Gamecocks run-ruled the Gators 13-3 in seven innings on Thursday and continued to balance offensive firepower with effective pitching, beating the Gators 5-2 on Friday and finishing out the series 7-5 on Saturday.


Gamecock beach volleyball hosted the Palmetto Invitational tournament during "Big Gamecock Weekend" on April 14-16. The team competed against Coastal Carolina University, College of Charleston, Florida Gulf Coast University and Jacksonville University. The Gamecocks defeated College of Charleston 4-1, Jacksonville 5 -0, Coastal Carolina 3-2 and FGCU 3-2.

Gamecock beach volleyball hosted the Palmetto Invitational tournament during "Big Gamecock Weekend" on April 14-16. The team competed against Coastal Carolina University, College of Charleston, Florida Gulf Coast University and Jacksonville University. The Gamecocks defeated College of Charleston 4-1, Jacksonville 5 -0, Coastal Carolina 3-2 and FGCU 3-2. 


The University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes competed in one of the two semifinal games at the 2023 Women’s Final Four matchup at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on March 31, 2023. The Gamecocks fought hard to continue its 42-game winning streak but ultimately fell to the Hawkeyes, led by junior guard Caitlin Clark, who scored 41 points.

The University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes competed in one of the two semifinal games at the 2023 Women’s Final Four matchup at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on March 31, 2023. The Gamecocks fought hard to continue its 42-game winning streak but ultimately fell to the Hawkeyes, led by junior guard Caitlin Clark, who scored 41 points.

In 2022, South Carolina took home its first ‘Palmetto Bowl’ trophy since 2013 after the 31-30 upset against Clemson at Memorial Stadium on Nov. 26, 2022. However, the Gamecock-Tiger rivalry goes beyond football. In the past year, South Carolina has defeated Clemson across six sports in the Palmetto Series, including both men’s and women’s basketball, football, baseball and men’s tennis. The Tigers, however, were able to beat the Gamecocks in men’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball and most recently, softball, while tying 2-2 in women’s soccer. The 25th annual Birdcage drag show took place on April 12, 2023, in Russell House. The event was interrupted by a fire alarm but resumed after the building was cleared.
