Local artist Thomas Humphries has been creating sculptures out of repurposed items since college. The medium has allowed Humphries to express passion through welding found materials into art, he said. Humphries' work can be found at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, South Carolina State Fairgrounds, West Columbia Riverwalk and other spaces throughout Columbia.
The South Carolina baseball team are 8-3 overall following two back-to-back losses to the Clemson Tigers in the 2024 Palmetto Series. The weekend began with game one of the series at Founders Park, which was postponed due to rain on Friday. The teams moved across town on Saturday for game two at Segra Park in the "Battle at Bull Street," where the Gamecocks suffered a 5-4 loss in extra innings against the Tigers. South Carolina then traveled to Clemson on Sunday to close out the series with a 5-4 loss at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The South Carolina baseball team reached its fourth run-rule victory of the season and clinched a series win against Belmont on Feb. 25, 2024, at Founders Park. The Gamecocks started the weekend with an 8-1 victory Friday, followed by an 11-2 loss in game two on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend with a 12-1 victory over the Bruins. The team will continue its nine-game homestead on Tuesday when it hosts Gardner-Webb.
2024 marks USC Dance Marathon's 26th year of fundraising for Prisma Health Children's Hospital - Midlands. The largest student-run philanthropic organization on campus, Dance Marathon has been operating at USC since 1999 and has raised over $8,000,000 for the Children's Hospital. This year, Dance Marathon raised a total of $715,107 after months of planning, events and fundraising before the main event, which took place on Feb. 24 at the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. During the event, students formed teams and participated in line dancing, games, and contests to raise money for the more than 150,000 children serviced by Prisma.
The South Carolina baseball team swept its opening series against Miami-Ohio on Feb. 16, 17 and 18, 2024, at Founders Park. The Gamecocks started the weekend with a 5-1 victory, followed by high scoring wins of 11-4 and 14-0. The team is ranked No. 25 in the nation.
The South Carolina Gamecocks delivered a decisive upset over the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats at a sold-out Colonial Life Arena on Jan. 23, 2024. The Gamecocks' defense played a large role in the 79-62 victory over the Wildcats. Fans across the arena stormed the court following the game, with players encouraging them to run onto the court. South Carolina is now 4-2 in conference play.
The Gamecock women's tennis team kicked off its 2023-24 season with a 2-0 record after defeating the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and Presbyterian Blue Hoses on Jan. 21, 2024. Juniors Sarah Hamner and Misa Malkin performed claimed a 6-3 doubles victory against the Chanticleers. Graduate student Ayana Akli secured a win in her singles match, 6-3, 5-0, and graduate student Elise Mills also dominated her singles match, going 6-0, 6-1. South Carolina will hit the road next to take on the University of Arizona in Athens, Georgia, on Jan. 26, 2024.
The Gamecocks women's basketball team locked in a win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs Sunday afternoon, holding onto its undefeated record. The team kept the lead in all four periods, ending the Jan. 7 match with a score of 89-66. Bree Hall scored 15 points, helping to close an uncomfortably close margin in the third quarter with assistance during the rest of the game from Kamilla Cardoso, who scored 13 points. Up next, the Gamecocks are scheduled to face Missouri Thursday on the road.
The South Carolina men's basketball team defeated Mississippi State on Jan. 6, 2024, at Colonial Life Arena. The Gamecocks faced the Bulldogs in the opening game of SEC play for the season and are now 13-1 for the sixth time in school history.
The Gamecocks for Israel student organization at USC held a rally on Dec. 7, 2023, to show support for Israel and call for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Members of the Jewish community in Columbia and allies gathered on Greene Street while Jewish students and community leaders gave speeches. Speakers included second-year international business student and president of Hillel at USC Casey Fitzgerald, Rabbi Sruly Epstein of Chabad at USC and Alpha Epsilon Pi President Bari Klarberg. The rally was interrupted by a group of pro-Palestine counter-protestors but quickly resumed after campus police and several members of the rally intervened.
Gamecocks men's basketball continued its strong start Monday night with a 65-53 win against Notre Dame. For the first time since the 2016-17 season, South Carolina is undefeated through six games. Junior guard Meechie Johnson was the star of the game, scoring a career-high 29 points and carrying the Gamecocks to victory.
The University of South Carolina matches up against Clemson University for the 120th annual Palmetto Bowl on Nov. 25, 2023, at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Tigers took the lead and never looked back, defeating the Gamecocks 16-7.
Tiger Burn marks the start of rivalry week between the University of South Carolina and Clemson University with the burning of a giant wooden tiger. This year's tiger was constructed by students from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The tradition at South Carolina stems from the 1902 upset victory over Clemson where a drawing featuring a gamecock over a beaten tiger frustrated Clemson students, leading to an agreement from both universities to burn the poster. The 2023 Palmetto Bowl will take place on Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Williams-Brice Stadium.
Finnish DJ Darude performed a mix of music from his discography, including songs from his newest album, "Together," and his hit single "Sandstorm," at a pre-game concert at Gamecock Park. Once in the stadium, Darude visited the sidelines and student section, and he DJ'd during the Gamecocks' game against Kentucky. The musician's song was first played by South Carolina in a game against Ole Miss in 2009 and has since become a Gamecock tradition.
The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 17-14 at Williams-Brice Stadium on Nov. 18, 2023. The win was the Gamecocks' third in a row and puts the team one win away from the threshold for bowl eligibility with a record of 5-6 (3-5 SEC). Redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Rattler and fifth-year wide receiver Xavier Legette cemented their names in the school record books with standout performances in the victory.
The South Carolina Gamecocks faced the Vanderbilt Commodores at Williams-Brice Stadium on Nov. 11, 2023. The Gamecocks commanded a 47-6 victory, putting the team at 4-6 on the season. The Gamecocks totaled 487 yards to the Commodores' 234.
Members of Students for Socialism, the Arab Student Association, Dawah on Campus, Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace, held a walkout in support of Palestine on the Russell House Patio on Nov. 9, 2023. Around 50 to 60 students, faculty and staff attended the event to raise awareness for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
South Carolina took on Jacksonville State at Williams-Brice Stadium on Nov. 4, 2023. The team from the Ohio Valley Conference kept a tight hold on South Carolina initially, with the latter leading 21-14 in the first half of the game. After several successful turnovers and a pick-six from sophomore linebacker Stone Blanton in the fourth quarter, South Carolina was able to take home a 38-28 victory. South Carolina leaves the game with a 3-6 record and will return with another home game against Vanderbilt on Nov. 11, 2023.
