South Carolina prepares to open season against C of C

After a busy offseason, the swim and dive team is ready to hit the pool this weekend in its first meet of the year against College of Charleston. The team has been preparing all summer to get ready to battle the Cougars this weekend, coach McGee Moody said.

Connor Shaw (14) and Mike Davis (28) have lead the Gamecocks to No. 30 in total offense.

Defense still struggles

Watching Saturday’s game between South Carolina and Kentucky was like déjà vu. For the past three weeks, the Gamecocks have built up a comfortable lead, only to let defensive and special team miscues let the other team back into the game.

Sophomore Darian Dozier said her second season has been more productive because she is used to her position.

Dozier draws from experience in 2nd season

As a freshman last season, Darian Dozier was seemingly lost in a sea of other great players such as Bethanie Thomas, Cara Howley and Juliette Thévenin. This season, she’s making her presence known and has been one of the top contributors for the Gamecocks, recording 76 blocks and 128 kills on her young season. Those stats put her 1st and 2nd respectively on the team and almost eclipse the numbers she put up all of last season.

Repeat performance for South Carolina defense

In South Carolina’s last three contests, the Gamecocks have not left fans wanting for drama. In Saturday’s 35-28 win over Kentucky, coach Steve Spurrier’s team allowed its third straight fourth-quarter battle after building a lead of at least 18 points.

Shaw, Davis shine in victory

While the late-game defensive woes continued, the South Carolina offense shined in both the running and passing game against Kentucky.

Cooper's time 'is coming'

A defensive back turned wide receiver, freshman Pharoh Cooper may find himself playing more of a role for South Carolina beginning next week at Arkansas.

Offense relying on Davis

Only three days after he announced quarterback Connor Shaw would be out for two to three weeks, coach Steve Spurrier said that Shaw would be starting in this week’s game against Kentucky.

South Carolina faces off against Kentucky

Though South Carolina has suffered just one loss this season, coach Steve Spurrier said Saturday’s home contest against Kentucky will be a crucial turning point in the Gamecocks’ 2013 campaign.

Behind enemy lines

1. What do Kentucky fans think of Mark Stoops so far this season? I imagine most fans understood that the team would struggle, but is there still positive energy surrounding the team?

Junior goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo said the women’s soccer team’s aspirations go beyond an SEC championship; they hope to win a national championship this year.

D'Angelo leads defense

The No. 9 Gamecocks (9-1-1, 2-1 SEC) head to Gainesville Friday to play No. 23 Florida (8-2-1, 2-1 SEC) in a battle to remain atop the conference. South Carolina will then travel to Tennessee Sunday, where it will face the Volunteers (6-3-2, 1-1-1 SEC), who are hungry for a win.

Equestrian hits road

When Katherine Schmidt first arrived at South Carolina, she expected to ride and compete, but she didn’t expect to be all that successful. Three years and 51 wins later, Schmidt has seen a good bit of success. The junior has led the team in wins in each of her first two seasons and was named the AgSouth Female Athlete of the Year her freshman season. She has also racked up 12 MVPs in 68 rides.

Volleyball hosts 4 straight games

Volleyball coach Scott Swanson has made his expectations of his players abundantly clear to them throughout the season. “You go out there and compete your butt off for however long it takes and see what happens,” Swanson said. “We’re just trying to preach to our kids, ‘Do the best you can, and if you walk away and that best wasn’t good enough, you still have to hold your head up high.’”
