HIV disproportionately affects the LGBTQIA+ population, and getting care is hard without affordable insurance, a problem made worse by the homophobic stigma that runs deep in South Carolina. We have a government reluctant to care for people living with HIV, so now it's up to us to get people the care and testing they deserve.
While Noah Glasgow became the first openly gay speaker of student senate this year, he has not been the only Student Government executive be open about their sexuality. Zachery Scott became the first openly gay student body president when was was elected in 2004.
S.C. laws historically have not been in favor of the LGBTQIA+ community, but they have come a long way. There have been improvements but the journey for equality is not over yet.
