Column: Summer 2022 style trends bring questions about cultural appropriation

Summer 2022 trends such as the "clean girl aesthetic" and African waist beads may have brought people together on social media, but the popularization of these styles can be damaging to the communities where they originated. People looking to participate in these trends should first learn how cultural appropriation can become cultural appreciation. 

The interior of Azalea Coffee Bar, a chic new woman-owned establishment on Devine Street. The mural is of owner Brittany Koester's mother, and contributes to the shop's goal of uplifting women and reducing disparities in the industry.
